The Art of Blogging - Eliminate the Bull and Improve Your Posts

Young BullI am a novice at blogging.  Often, I write a post only to see that it only got one or two comments.  I then read a post and there are hundreds of comments.  When it comes to blogging, there are some writers who are naturals.  Their posts are short, clear, and concise.  They have a clearly defined point, are well-organized, and communicate the point efficiently and effectively.  Then, there are others like me who struggle with writing a blog post.

Often, it appears that the number of comments has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the content of the post.  Rather, it has to do with the organization, structure and even writing style of the author.  I must admit, although I am equally guilty of the same errors, I tend to stop reading when the writer of the post uses 1000s of words lumped in a single paragraph with no headings, no structure and not even an interesting graphic or, as bad or worse, too many graphics that don't support the point.

So, I asked my real estate partner Michelle Silies, a former Notes and Comments editor for St. Louis University Public Law Review, to read my post and to give me some advice as how to become a better blogger.  Here are her comments:

•  Start and end your post with an emotional hook.

•  Organize or even outline your points before you start writing.

•  Order your comments in a logical sequence and structure your post, where appropriate, by using headers, paragraphs, and bolding or underline to emphasize a point.

•  Use short sentences with a single point or vary sentences between short and long sentences.

•  Use active as opposed to passive sentences.

•  Use everyday terms and language.

•  Use you, we or I as opposed to "salespersons".

•  Avoid jargon or acronyms.  Define terms that may not be easily understood.

•  Use positive, inspiring language.

•  Don't tell a point; show the point.

•  Avoid negative words like "can't", "don't" or "won't."

•  Edit, Edit, Edit.  Wield the axe to eliminate unnecessary words.

•  Keep it simple and concise.

•  When finished, read it out loud to see if it is conversational and natural.

•  Personalize the text.  Where appropriate, use quotations.

•  Use readable typeface.

•  Use graphics that support your point.

She then reminded me to use the statistics feature built into Microsoft Word.  It can be turned on by going to "Tools" then "Options" the "Spelling & Grammar" and then click on "Show Readability Stats" box.  When you spell check your text, it will tell you the number of sentences per paragraph, number of average words per sentence, number of passive sentences, and readability using the Flesch Reading Ease score (60% is goal for plain English).  However, you can take this tool to new level by downloading the Bullfighter software developed by Deloitte Consulting at www.fightthebull.com.   In addition to the Flesch Reading Ease score, it also includes the Bull Index which identifies "bull" words (ie. jargon, overused terms, etc.) and provides some simple tips to improve the readability of your post.

Now, it is time to practice what I preach.  If you have some tips for new bloggers to learn the Art of Blogging, please post your tips in the comments section.

There were certainly a ton of disclaimers at the end of this . But the blog was good and made good points

Posted by All Mountain Realty over 3 years ago

Charlie:  Yes, I know about the disclaimers - gonna use a link when I get time to revise the webpage.

Posted by Ryan Shaughnessy, Broker/Attorney - Your Lafayette Square Real Estate Partner (PREA Signature Realty - www.preasignaturerealty.com) over 3 years ago

Wow!  If I understand correctly we should shorten our blogs which will increase the percentage of the entire post which is a legal disclaimer.  Wow, again.

Excellent points Ryan and not only great for novices but a good reminder for us all.  I am just getting back into the swing of things again and am trying to catch up on your fabulous posts - they're really great you novice you - LOL. ~ Anne Marie

Richard:  Absolutely.  But in all seriousness, Lenn's posts got me to thinking.  I had both of our liability carriers suggest language for the disclaimers and this is what they suggested.  I added the licensing info because blogs can be construed as advertising and I don't believe that just having the brokerage name is sufficient to meet the requirements of our state licensing statute.  By the way, copyright infringement isn't covered under some real estate E&O policies so I would rather error on the safe side.

Anne Marie:  I am glad to see you back in the swing of things.  I missed your posts.  When you read someone regularly on Activerain, you start getting withdrawals when they don't post for awhile.

Hi Ryan!  GREAT list!  I have to say that I spend WAAAYY too much time tweaking my posts and I'm also too long winded!  My hubby tells me that I need to write the Reader's Digest CONDENSED version!  Alot of readers are just trying to get through their 10-posts-a-day and don't want to spend too much time on the longer posts.  My feeling, I'm writing for the public--for my clients 90% of the time; the rest of the time, my AR friends are going to read the post if it's a member's only or a personal post--if they're looking just for points, it's okay if they don't stop by mine!  I want to get to know the agents here so that I can refer my valued clients to them should I ever need to.

You see!  I can't even wrap up a comment!  I was just going to end it with--so, don't worry about how many folks comment, there are others reading and if they don't comment now, they may the next time!  It takes a bit sometimes to get loyal readers.  You're doing JUST fine here in the RAIN; remember we all went through this very thing!

This is great, Ryan. Are you posting the disclaimers (quite lengthy but packed with excellent stuff!) on all of your blogs? There's been a lot of copyright conversation on AR lately... Also, I've never re-posted anyone's blog, but would like to try--using this one...may I?

Another great tip for your blog is when using pictures add a horizontal buffer of say 5 so the words aren't all the way up against the picture. It also makes it easier to read, hope this helps and good luck on your goal to build readership.

The 80/20 rule works very well here:

  • 80% of the posts that get lots of comments are from members who have been here a long time and have a huge following of several hundred members through their associations and the groups they belong to. Each morning, that fan base gets up to see what their mentor has written. 80% of the time it's something good and gets more than 50 comments. 20% of the time it's a stinker and gets 10 comments.
  • 20% of the posts that get lots of comments are from members who realize that the way to get lots of comments is to use a title that includes "Active Rain," "points," or "blog/blogging" in the title.

Here's some other information that I've been able to put together by doing a lot of Active Rain reading and have adopted as my own, as well: http://activerain.com/blogsview/717389/12-reasons-why-I

Additionally, you can find lots of good information over here: http://activerain.com/blogs/russelray. Scroll down to the bottom of my most recent blog entry there and you'll find links to helpful information about Active Rain, points, blogging, etc.

Best wishes.

Mara:  We are trying different things.  It comes from different angles - some are from our insurance carriers, some from outside counsel.  We are experimenting with the disclaimers at this point.  Absolutely - repost.  As the disclaimer indicates, any ActiveRain member can repost.

Todd;  Good tip - that buffer is important for readability.

Dan:  Original content is always better quality anyway.  It is based on personal experience and is more interesting.

Russell:  Thanks for all the information.  As I have said many times, often the comments are as good or as better as the original post.  Your comment is a good example.

I too really appreciate the information shared in this post. I have to admit I skipped over the disclaimers. I wanted to stay up longer to read more posts and if I read all of those I may have nodded off and missed this beautiful Rain storm.
